Kim Jones, there are several mirrors, and though, as mirrors do, the images look the same, or maybe similar, they each represent a different side of the artist.
That's the easiest way to describe how it's like talking to Jones. She exudes passion and energy, but there's a comfortable kind of diffidence that's hard to miss. At any point in time, "you're never really sure which Kim you're going to get." Her words.
Reinvention keeps her alive. Blame that partly on her moon sign, Scorpio, she says. In the omnipresent world of astrology, the moon sign is supposedly the ruler of emotions, feelings, and moods. So, she explains, as we wait for the accessories to arrive, why she's is loving this moment where we are seated in the dark corner of the studio-while she's dressed in black vintage Comme des Garçons. She always likes to find the quiet in the middle of, or after, any kind of chaos, however beautiful it may be.
"When MEGA approached me and asked me to be part of the reinvention issue, I'immediately was so excited and inspired because I think everyone is coming to terms with their own inflection points post-pandemic," Jones says.
She answers questions this way during the entire interview: always discerning, often in retrospect, but also with a lot of excitement about moving forward. "It's still unfolding before us. Reinvention to me is taking something pure and changing it until it's almost unrecognizable, but it's still true to its core. And that manifests creatively, obviously, through a lot of experimentation and a lot of curiosity. I find a lot of comfort in change. I find a lot of comfort in exploration. I don't like being stagnant. It doesn't sit right with me."
