The Australian International Airshow, commonly known as the Avalon Airshow, is a biennial event that showcases the latest in aviation technology and celebrates Australia's aviation history. AVALON 23 is the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting aviation and aerospace professions, key defence personnel, aviation enthusiasts and the general public. Over the weekend, aviation enthusiasts from around the world gathered at Avalon Airport in Geelong, Victoria, for the 2023 edition of the airshow.
The first major airshow in Australia was held in 1988 at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base in Richmond, New South Wales. It was known as the Bicentennial Airshow and featured a range of military aircraft on display. In 1991, a second airshow was held in conjunction with the RAAF's 80th anniversary. Following the success of the two airshows, the Australian International Airshow was then moved to Avalon Airport in 1992 and was attended by 175,000 visitors.
AVALON is held biennially and AVALON 23 is the 15th iteration, allowing generations of industry and defence representatives and tourists alike to experience the true power of partnerships, alliances, airpower and community. This six-day event also falls in line with the second anniversary of the trilateral security partnership of Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, or AUKUS, which seeks to deepen and modernise relationships with two key allies, bolster international security and promote a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Avalon hosts multiple concurrent conferences and expo streams, across the spectrum of defence, airlines, business and general aviation, sport and recreational aviation, airports, MRO, space, unmanned systems, air safety and ground equipment. Avalon supports multiple ways to engage with government, industry and defence opportunities, including indoor and outdoor exhibitions, chalets, sponsorship and networking events.

Maputo airshow 2024 What a treat!
On Sunday 16 June Christine and I returned from attending the Maputo airshow and what a fantastic experience this was not only for estimated 15 000 spectators, but also the members of the media present. As always Brian Emmenis and his team were on top form with a great selection of music. The grand finale with the Puma Energy Flying Lions T6 Harvards was simply beautiful and I saw several spectators with tears in their eyes as they expressed their happiness for the airshow.
