One would think that a 200-yearold Champagne as renowned as Billecart-Salmon did not need any marketing, yet Billecart-Salmon AsiaPacific head, Sebastien Papin was recently in India to tell us about the brand and how the wine is best appreciated.

This Champagne House is still owned and run by the Billecart-Salmon family — one of the last few concerns that survive in the shadow of big Champagne houses like Moët-Hennessy and others of that ilk.

Champagne is a luxury wine that frequently costs twice as much as other sparkling wines, a position assiduously maintained by a combination of fierce adherence to quality, good marketing practices, and protection of the ‘champagne’ name and identity. Which is why when Champagne India Ltd was launched by the late Shamrao Chougule in Mumbai in 1986, he was constrained to change the name to Château Indage Ltd or face massive legal troubles.
