Peer at an individual flower from the inflorescence of Starship Scarlet lobelia, and you might be reminded of a hummingbird hovering in flight.

Blast Off With Bright Color!

Plant these in your garden and you'll see plenty of the actual bird zipping about, feeding from the stunning red blooms. A cross of several native lobelias, this cultivar is loaded with flower spikes that bloom from midsummer to fall, just when hummingbirds and butterflies are fueling up for their migratory journeys.

SUNSHINE AND WATER Starship Scarlet lobelia is a columnar-growing plant that fits into tight spaces with ease, which also makes it a great candidate as a container thriller. Its dark green leaves are blushed on the edges with bronze or burgundy, turning darker in sunnier spots. It loves full sun, but give it some afternoon shade where summers are hot and dry.

Grow Starship Scarlet lobelia in rich, consistently moist soil. It is perfect for rain gardens or the edges of a water feature, as in "Along the Water's Edge" below, where roots stay moist but are not submerged for long periods of time.
