This Faceting Focus is revisiting the briolette gemstone design because of its popularity with independent and hobby gemstone faceters.

SNAKE SCALE DROP 1.5:1

Based on the number of colleagues who are asking me for briolette gemstone designs and the amount of briolette gemstones I see being posted on social media, it is fair to say that the interest in briolette gemstone designs is growing. The design in this article is from Andrew Ian Brown’s new gemstone faceting design book, Gemstone Faceting Designs Briolettes.

SNAKE SCALE DROP 1.5:1

The Snake Scale Drop 1.5:1 design is a beautiful squat briolette for jewelry or as a collector gemstone. The directions are straightforward and easy to follow, however, the facet count is 216 and requires a larger gemstone if you want to see your meet points. It would be a challenge to facet this on a small stone. The one we faceted was 41 ct and 25 mm high. At this size, it would make a great drop pendent. A larger stone would go into the collector category.

Cleaning & Cracking Géodes, Great and Small

Geodes. From their Latin and Greek origins meaning ‘earth-like,’ the cracking and cleaning of these popular stone eggs is no yolk: those unassuming exteriors can belie wonderful clusters of crystals or banded layers of agate within!

Fascinating Fluorite A Beginner & Collector's Favorite

Should you be found, be it working on your collection or walking around a mineral show, humming the song \"My Favorite Things\" with the mineral name 'Fluorite' worked into the lyrics, many of us collectors would totally understand, and probably join in. If that's not the case, let's see if we can make that happen.

ROMANCING THE RUBY

Few words are as packed with meaning as “ruby.” While the word refers primarily to the legendary red gemstone, it is also the preferred adjective for red colors of extraordinary intensity and purity. Its association with wealth and royalty conjures romantic images of kingdoms that once flourished in such historical ruby sources as Ceylon, Siam, Burma and India.
