“I am a visual artist working between painting and sculpture. Currently I make site-specific architectural glass works (aka stained glass), exploring how art can become implicit with its surrounding architecture.
Pavilion Pavilion started as a means to explore how functional objects such as furniture relate to artistic ideas. Working in glass happened almost by accident after I moved to Glasgow from London (where I studied painting at the Royal College of Art) and began noticing the leaded glass in the city’s tenements. I realised that although it is an inherently beautiful material, few artists were pushing the boundaries of its design. I wanted to bring a contemporary aesthetic to a historical art form.
Often, when I meet a client for a new commission and I look at the space, a feeling of scale or energy comes instantly. Themes emerge in conversation, which then inform my approach to the design. For very large commissions, I like to mock up samples to see how the ideas translate to glass. Very simple drawings can make the most striking yet poignant windows – it just takes a bit of courage and conviction to run with something so simple.

You might think the process is purely creative, but designing knitted textiles requires a deep understanding of geometry and pattern calculations. It is intricate and often mathematical. I have learned that knitting demands a constant balance between artistry and engineering. Creating a new textile involves not only selecting colours and yarns but also considering the tensile strength, elasticity and drape of the material. That way, I ensure the final product is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. To me, this blend of creativity and technical precision is a fascinating aspect of knitted textile design.
