Owners of Emerald Guitars Kim and Alistair Hay have got creative with their family home and combining Kim's love for interiors and Alistair's handiwork they have not only renovated the existing farmhouse but also built an additional 2,500sq. ft guest apartment with garages underneath as well as an eye-catching thatched cottage.
As Kim explains, 'When Ali and I were engaged we were looking for a suitable home and ended up purchasing Ali's parent's house. At that stage the property just consisted of the main farmhouse and over time we have made structural changes to the exterior to give it a bit more character, adding the two-storey stone entrance and decorative edging.
'Both Ali and I love cars so we decided to design a separate garage space, which then developed into a large open-plan two-storey guest apartment with two bedrooms and a bathroom, as well as a games room and second bathroom off it. This will allow us to convert the games room into a third bedroom if needed at a later stage. This space is used by customers traveling from all over the world to see us here in Donegal and for entertaining family and friends, as well as our staff for company lunches and Christmas parties. However, we do use it a lot as a family, and to be honest, I probably use the kitchen in the apartment more than the one in my house! We all love hanging out in the snug for family games nights or reading a book. The house is located at the top of a valley and the views from the snug are amazing; it feels like you are up in the clouds!'
