THERE ARE Some things owners do for their dogs that they know the pup doesn't like think vet visits and grooming-but humans do them anyway, for Fido's wellbeing. On the other hand, there are some equally well-intentioned owner behaviors you might think your pet does like, but you're wrong and don't realize it. A few actions in that category: the hugs you give your fur baby; the times you dress them up; or when you spray them with a strong scent. The "dogs don't like it" rule goes for even the most laid-back of canines, who, if they do tolerate such human actions, it's just because they love you or don't want to be dominant. Keep the following in mind.
Hugging
It's really cute to look at photos of people hugging dogs, and most dogs tolerate gentle hugs from trusted humans, but the reality is that hugging is not always so comfortable for a dog. That goes double for strangers, whose arm around the dog's neck or body may be perceived as a threat.
Instead, let the dog cuddle on his own terms and pet him along the back and on the chest (especially if you don't know the dog well). Pay attention to your dog's body language to understand how he feels when you hug him. If he leans away, averts his eyes, yawns, licks his lips, has a worried look, or shows any other appeasement gestures, he's probably uncomfortable.
Getting in a Dog's Face and Personal Space
Much like hugging, dogs tend to dislike it when humans get in their faces. Think about how it would make you feel! Avoid putting your hands in a dog's face, towering over dogs, and rushing toward them. This is especially important if the dog does not know you well.
