What keeps designer Angela Lim crafting stunning interiors year after year is her love of a good challenge-and an appreciation of the extraordinary. Her passion for design dates back to an early infatuation with the arts, followed by years of fruitful work alongside other interior designers who inspired her and aided her growth, culminating in the launch of her own design firm, SuMisura.
"Becoming a designer has allowed me to collaborate with extraordinary minds and exchange innovative ideas. The joint brainstorming [process] can be incredibly fulfilling, especially when someone brings something exceptional to the table," she shares.
Her favourite part of this exercise? "I absolutely love it when the most extraordinary ideas are proven to work."
DEFINING GOOD DESIGN
In Lim's eyes, good design is multifaceted and personalised. From form to function, well-designed interiors are relevant to their context and stand the test of time.
In the short run, good design is "about making the uncomfortable comfortable, and the unattractive into something beautiful".
As such, her interiors are influenced by their cultural context, including the existing architecture and the intangible essence of the space, as well as each client's unique lifestyle.
"At its core, interior design is about striking a delicate balance: establishing a sensible and orderly foundation before layering on glamorous statement pieces," she muses. "If the foundation is lacking, decorating efforts are wasted."
