BETWEEN 1990 AND THIS YEAR, Eric Khoo has had a hand in over 40 film and television projects. Even so, the prodigiousness of his output is not as staggering as the stylistic signature he has given certain films that are now enshrined in the (inter)national consciousness as some of the best Singaporean ones ever made. The qualifier emphasises the fact that he, more than anyone else, has made Singaporean stories resonate internationally.
On the release of his latest feature film, Khoo mulls over topics new and old that have seized his attention and benefitted from his insight.

After doing 12 Storeys, my co-writer James Toh, star Lucella Teoh, and I wrote a white paper calling for the formation of a Singapore film commission. We sent it to the Prime Minister’s Office, and after four months, it was approved. The commission has been riding steadily since 1998. It supports every film here. That must continue.
