Barry Du Bois often has the sagest of advice. Not only has he provided renovating tips to Aussies in his 11-year stint on The Living Room, but he's also a New Idea columnist and a dad of two kids who often turn to him for answers.

Yet overcoming dark thoughts, or a brush with the "dark dog" as Baz puts it, and providing guidance on how to traverse this is something the popular star has long found difficult.

But after being impacted by Jock Zonfrillo's recent death, Barry, 62, is now sharing the moment that challenged him to change his way of thinking.

"Like many people, terrible thoughts were running through my head," Barry tells New Idea.

"My son, Bennett, had come and jumped into bed with me, and it was his movements and twitching, as well as little yelps, that broke my already broken sleep.

"I put my hand on his head and tried to comfort him," he explains.

"I had worked up a scene in my head where scary people were chasing him and I needed to dive into his dream and take care of business - slay the dragon or beat up the villain.
