Russell Crowe has sent fans into a tailspin after alluding to throwing in the towel on his long and revered career. He also hinted at being in the throes of a midlife identity crisis.

Fast approaching his 60th birthday next April, Russell has confessed that he no longer recognises himself when he looks in the mirror.

“You go: ‘Who the f--k is that?’ I am in that period now,” Russell said while at a film festival in the Czech Republic earlier this month. “I will take [director] Ridley Scott as my role model – he is still discovering new things in his work. Or I will just stop, and you will never hear from me again.

“I haven’t decided what it’s going to be. These are two very valid choices.”
