And then there are those who might associate the American jeweller with another precious gem - the pearl. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the US, certainly did: In February 1861, the then president-elect stopped by the Tiffany store in New York en route to Washington. There, he bought a seed-pearl suite of jewellery that he gifted his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, for the presidential inaugural ball in 1862.
