Many top jewellery houses have their own spirit animal, and there is no doubt that the panther is synonymous with Cartier. While jewellery enthusiasts are familiar with the brand's figurative use of the panther, the creature was first interpreted in an abstract manner, appearing in the form of black onyx spots on a ladies' wristwatch back in 1914.
Three years later, the first figurative representation of the panther made its Cartier debut in a tableau on a cigarette case that Louis Cartier gifted Jeanne Toussaint in 1917. Toussaint, who later became the brand's director of fine jewellery, would be pivotal in making the big cat a house signature.
