From diamond‑set carabiner‑inspired clasps to a carbon fibre cuff, Chanel knocks it out of the park with Sport, an audacious and innovative high jewellery collection unlike any other

Game On

Nestled between the Southern Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, Monte Carlo is renowned for its glitz and glamour—a playground for the rich and famous. Characterised by its azure waters and lush, mountainous backdrop, this picturesque district in Monaco is home to the famous Place du Casino, a vibrant square surrounded by high‑end boutiques and luxury hotels, including the legendary Hôtel de Paris Monte‑Carlo.

The locale certainly made for the most breathtaking setting for the unveiling of Chanel’s latest high jewellery collection, Sport, this June. Tatler Singapore was invited to the principality for this exclusive event, which saw celebrities such as British actress and Chanel ambassador Keira Knightley in attendance, and where we enjoyed wonderful ballet and contemporary dance performances by the Princess Grace Academy in the Opéra de Monte‑Carlo, followed by an exquisite gala dinner in the adjacent Casino de Monte‑Carlo.

Prior to the elegant affair, we previewed the new Sport collection showcased in an exhibition held just steps away from Chanel’s boutique in Place du Casino. Sport‑themed scenography and elements such as bleacher seats, floodlights and scoreboards set the stage for a closer look at the stunning pieces, many of which hides plenty of surprises.

Based on the theme alone, the Sport collection is quite unlike any other in the traditional high jewellery world and is sure to raise some eyebrows. By incorporating the ideas of sport and athleticism, Chanel is breaking new ground and challenging preconceptions about what high jewellery can represent. The maison has never been afraid to innovate, keeping alive the bold and transformative spirit of its founder, Gabrielle Chanel. This collection pays tribute to the revolutionary designer as well as her legacy of championing the freedom of movement and sporty elegance in the 1920s.
