“Artificial intelligence is going to shape this decade,” declares Harjit Gill, the CEO of Asia Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed), a leading trade association representing the medical technology, or medtech for short, industry in Asia Pacific. Fittingly, the 2024 edition of its flagship event, the Asia Pacific MedTech Forum, is themed “The Dec‑Ai‑De of Intelligent Healthcare Systems” and will explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in fuelling more intelligent healthcare systems. Departing from the traditional format, this year’s forum, which takes place on September 5 and 6, aims to provide an immersive and engaging experience inspired by conferences in the US.
“It’s not a typical conference where you sit and listen. It’s the first time we’re experimenting with a new format,” says Gill. The event will feature central keynote speakers in the main plenary, dialogue dens for masterclasses and discussions, a marketplace showcasing industry offerings around the world, and dedicated networking areas dubbed “brain dates” by APACMed.
Headlining the line‑up of speakers is Pakistani Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, a passionate advocate for women’s education, who will speak about the importance of education in healthcare, particularly in this region. Joining Yousafzai is Dr Brent James, a renowned expert in clinical quality improvement described by Gill as a “rock star for doctors”, and Tom Lawry, an AI transformation adviser, a bestselling author and a former director of Worldwide Health for Microsoft. Also on the speakers list is Matthew Luhn, a Pixar veteran known for his work on the Toy Story movies and Finding Nemo, who will bring his storytelling expertise to illuminate the medtech industry’s value.
