THE sea has played a key role in Panerai's legacy. The watchmaker made military watches for the Italian Navy in the 1950s, ones that could function underwater in extreme conditions. The brand even made diving watches for the Egyptian Navy. Today, Panerai's relationship with the sea continues to be strong and spans robust diving watches and eco-conscious initiatives that protect the oceans. Part of that is also its association with America's Cup. Since 2017, Panerai has created watches that take inspiration from the materials and technology used in the sailing competition. This year, Panerai resumes its role as the official sponsor of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team of the America's Cup. To commemorate the occasion, the brand has unveiled the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa.
The 1,500-piece limited edition watch has a 44mm, brushed steel case and a blue sun-brushed dial. The dial features eight dotted hour markers, a double bar-shaped hour marker for 12 o'clock, a single bar-shaped hour marker with Luna Rossa' logo at 6 o'clock. There's a date window at 3 o'clock, and a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o'clock. Powering the watch is the automatic P.900 movement with a 72-hour power reserve. Completing the watch is a bi-material blue fabric on a black rubber strap with the 'Luna Rossa' branding in red; accompanying it is a trapezoidal brushed steel buckle. Alessandro Ficarelli, Panerai's Chief Marketing Officer, says the watch personifies the brand's strong mechanical know-how and highly distinguished design.
