Varsity Blues to Freeman
Born in 1962, Gabe Newell showed an early interest in technology and the promise of what computers can do. Throughout his time at Davis Senior High School in Davis, California, Newell had dreams of doing something unique in the world of computers and the best place for him to reach his dreams, at least that’s what he thought, was the highly acclaimed Harvard University. Newell excelled in High School and easily got accepted into Harvard in 1980. However, he soon realized that Varsity life was not all it was cracked up to be, feeling frustrated with his classes and his lecturers, Newell went to visit his brother who started work at an up-and-coming software company called Microsoft. In 2013 Newell told the story of how Steve Balmer unconventionally convinced him to join the company in an interview with students through Google Hangouts provided by Code.org, Newell said “The most valuable educational experience for me was sort of the nontraditional one. I was going to university and went out to visit my brother – he just started at this new software company, which was the third-largest software company on the east side of Lake Washington, and I was going out to visit him, and all of a sudden he was working all the time. So rather than hanging out with me and seeing the Space Needle, I was just hanging out with him at work. Steve Ballmer got mad that I was distracting him and said, ‘Well, if you’re going to be spending all your time hanging out here, you need to do something useful.”
