Recently my son R watched the classic comic movie Withnail and I. When he strolled in and I asked him how he was, he launched into Hamlet's famous soliloquy, delivered in the film by Richard E Grant as he swigs from a wine bottle in Regent's Park. My large, tattooed son, who has an acute ear and a strong sense of comedy, recited Shakespeare's lines word for word. This was not only hilarious but also, as it is in the play and in the film, profoundly beautiful. Later, he visited his grandmother, with whom he has a close relationship. She has been ill lately, and when he gave her his rendition of melancholy Hamlet, she wept.
