From an early age, Deepika Bharti had a fascination for handicrafts and yearned to learn how to stitch and make her own artifacts and perhaps carve a name for herself by selling her creations in future and ensuring her economic stability. But the young girl from Pithoragarh district in the hill state of Uttarakhand had neither the means nor opportunity to get any training, which would help her realize her dreams. “Family responsibilities prevented me from following my passion,” confides Deepika, now in her early thirties. “In 2008, I started painting on my own and sold some of my pictures from home itself. Two years later, I got married and shifted to Bageshwar.”
It was in this quaint district town located in Kumaon region that Deepika got her real break. She learned about a skills training programme being offered to youth and women in various different disciplines including stitching and tailoring and immediately enrolled into the stitching and handicrafts course. “In 2015, I created my own Artisan card and I am now a master trainer with the programme, giving training to other aspiring girls in handicrafts making,” she states happily.
The programme helped rebuild the lives of women such as Tara Devi, 32, who left an abusive husband in 2015 and returned to her maternal home in Bilauna village, about 4 km from Bageshwar, with two small children. With her parents’ encouragement, she took training the same year in tailoring. “Today, I have my own tailoring shop in the village. I am also a master trainer at the Sansthan (programme) since 2020 and have trained 40 girls till now,” she avers.
