Astle's Daughter Honoured For Dementia Campaigning
Birmingham Mail|December 31, 2024
DAWN Astle, daughter of West Bromwich Albion legend Jeff, has been made an MBE for her campaigning for more research into head injuries in football.
Astle's Daughter Honoured For Dementia Campaigning

Jeff died in 2002 at the age of 59 from dementia. Following an inquest, a coroner recorded a verdict of death by industrial disease owing to his repeated heading of a ball.

A subsequent postmortem examination of Jeff's brain confirmed he had been suffering from the progressive disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition more commonly linked to boxers.

Dawn set up the Jeff Astle Foundation and has campaigned for years to promote the care of others affected by dementia, as well as for education and research into the illness.

She described being made an MBE as an "incredible honour" and added: "I'm filled with a profound sense of gratitude, humility, pride but also reflection on the fact this recognition comes on the loss of my dad.
