'BONKERS' RULING PROVES WHY UK SHOULD QUIT EURO COURT

Suella Braverman, who has criticised the court for blocking migrant flights to Rwanda, yesterday joined others attacking the verdict that Switzerland had failed its own citizens in dealing with climate change.

The former Home Secretary said that Britain must ensure it cannot be dictated to "by a foreign court in Strasbourg".

Many critics believe that European judges became too political when they grounded the first flight to Rwanda in June 2022.

Tory MP Danny Kruger said: "The Strasbourg court is setting itself up as a legislator in place of elected governments.

The ECHR has been bent out of shape by activists and politicians who want to seem progressive and internationalist by junking both nations and democracy. We should leave." The latest ECHR row, which comes after Rishi Sunak last week vowed to stand up to the court to ensure deportations are not blocked again, was sparked after a group of Swiss pensioners successfully argued that their government had failed to protect their human rights with a cut in carbon emissions.

Drift

Tory MP Tom Hunt said the "bonkers ruling is the latest example of the ECHR overreaching itself, with it trying to dictate to elected national governments what their climate change policies should be.

"The principle that lies behind this debate is the same as Brexit. It's about whether it's right for a foreign court or organisation to try and supersede national democracy. There is real momentum towards the drift towards the ECHR becoming more and more interventionist when it comes to interfering in the domestic affairs of established democracies."
