A CHARITY has warned that lives are on the line as more than 408,000 patients wait for heart care.
The alarming figure for January comes despite the overall NHS treatment queue falling for a fourth month to 7.58 million.
British Heart Foundation analysis shows the number of patients waiting in England has grown by 75% since February 2020. That is a rise of 175,000 enough to fill Wembley stadium twice.
January's figure of 408,061 was up by 2,101 on the previous month.
BHF chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths said the heart care wait continuing to rise despite overall lists falling was "an unacceptable trend".
She said: "Heart care can't wait.
Significant delays can lead to avoidable heart attacks, disabling heart failure and even premature death."
