Hotels and support for asylum seekers up £1bn in a single year

Latest Home Office figures show the annual cost was £5.42billion in the 2023/24 financial year.

It was over £1billion more than the £4.3billion recorded for the same bills in 2022/23, to cover asylum seekers while their claims were processed or small numbers were resettled.

Last September there was outrage after the Home Office admitted a huge chunk of the 2022/23 expenditure some £3billion went on hotels, around £8million a day.

The former Tory Government promised to reduce the overall bill by creating larger sites such as the controversial Bibby Stockholm floating barge moored off Portland, Dorset, and the former MoD base at Wethersfield, near Braintree, Essex.

Failed

But the latest figures show this bill has instead risen significantly since Home Secretary Yvette Cooper took charge.
