Edwards, 62, will appear in court tomorrow to face the charges over the alleged activity on WhatsApp between December 2020 and April 2022.
He is accused of sharing 37 images including six which are in the most extreme category.
Met Police arrested the married father of five on November 8 last year and detectives charged the broadcaster just over a month ago on June 26 following authorisation from the Crown Prosecution Service.
Edwards previously presented major royal and political events for the national broadcaster and was at the helm for the coverage following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
He also anchored the BBC's broadcast of the King's coronation last year.
According to the charge sheet, Edwards is accused of having six category A images, 12 category B pictures and 19 category C photographs on the social media site.
The offences of which he is accused are contrary to sections 1(1)(a) and 6 of the Protection of Children Act 1978, and if found guilty, he could receive a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
