RISHI Sunak displayed warmth, generosity of spirit and true graciousness in one of his last acts as Prime Minister.
Standing in front of 10 Downing Street with his wife by his side, he said that Sir Keir Starmer's "successes will be all of our successes".
This is the great truth at the heart of our democracy. Parties may win and lose elections, but if leaders serve with vision and integrity and the nation prospers, then we are all winners. Mr Sunak saluted the Labour leader as a "decent, public-spirited man who I respect". The two men may have very different ideas about the best way to take the country forward but Mr Sunak talks about Sir Keir as someone whose heart is in the right place.
Sir Keir has won one of the very greatest honours in this nation's life. As Mr Sunak said, he is "our Prime Minister".
