Forecasters predicted further trouble, warning of ice until 10am today in northeast Scotland, north-east and south-west England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Temperatures were due to drop to -5C (23F) in Scotland and -3C in London, the South-West and East Anglia – with the possibility of traffic problems and even some power cuts.
Later today temperatures could rise as high as 8C. Drumnadrochit in the Highlands was -10.4C early yesterday – the coldest temperature of the year. Topcliffe in North Yorkshire was the chilliest in England, at -7.4C.
