OWNERS of unregistered XL Bullys face being jailed after new laws banning the dogs took effect today.
Possession of the dangerous animals without a certificate of exemption could lead to them being seized and put down, and the owner prosecuted.
The breed has been blamed for at least 12 fatal attacks since 2020.
At least 40,000 owners registered their pets by the January 31 deadline, which was announced last year.
But it is estimated there are 10,000 unregistered XL Bullys that are now illegal in England and Wales.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hobrough said: "It is an absolute offence to be in possession of one of these dogs in a dwelling or in the public domain after today.
"People being in possession of such dogs do run that strong possibility of having a fine, conviction and potentially imprisonment."
