FROM the jaws of defeat and utter despair came sheer joy and glory.

It should go down as one of England's all-time miracle comebacks because they were heading home in humiliation.

Then Jude Bellingham provided a moment of genius and salvation to send the Three Lions into a quarter-final with Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Bellingham's overhead kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time deserves to be up there with David Platt's last-gasp winner against Belgium in Italia '90 as an iconic moment.

Harry Kane then scored the winner in extra time with England still counting their lucky stars because we should not forget how bad they were for so long in this match.

And, by the end, the England fans were singing Sweet Caroline again. What a rollercoaster of emotions.

Let's not dress this up as anything other than a great escape because how they got away with it is anyone's guess.

Make no mistake, Gareth Southgate was probably thinking about his exit strategy because defeat would have spelt the end of his reign.
