GARETH Southgate bows out with his reputation intact and praise from players, politicians and royalty ringing in his ears.

But, after Sunday's heartbreaking defeat in Berlin, he also leaves the stage without winning the trophy the country craves.

In his eight years as manager, he took England to their third World Cup semi-final, then their only two European Championship finals.

All three ended in heartbreak, meaning Southgate will always be considered a "nearly man" of English football.

The 53-year-old, who resigned yesterday, remains odds on to be knighted later this year.
