Winning Olympic silver is still a golden moment

JOSH KERR did not just break a national record that had stood for 11 years, he knocked a second off the mark set, somewhat surprisingly, by Mo Farah.

Winning Olympic silver is still a golden moment

Gold medallist over 5,000 and 10,000 metres at London 2012, Farah became the fastest British runner over 1500 metres at a Diamond League event in Monaco in 2013 that he was using to test his speed.

His time of 3.28:21 broke Steve Cram's record of 3.29:67 that had stood for 28 years.

The fastest Sebastian Coe had ever run over a distance at which he won two Olympic gold medals was 3.29:77 while Steve Ovett never broke 3.30.

And for those who say the constant advance of sports science means running records will be broken continually, Coe's 800metre British record has stood at 1.41:73 for 43 years.

Colin Jackson's 110m hurdles all-time British best mark of 12.91 was set 31 years ago.

In other words, Kerr's effort in the 1500 metres in Paris was a landmark run, even though it did not bring a gold medal.
