A HEARTBROKEN dog owner is calling for a ban on the sale of fireworks after her terrified pet was killed as it fled from the sound of explosives.
The plea comes just days after the Record reported on Bonfire Night chaos across Scotland that left police officers injured and locals terrified.
Fiona Longworth, 47, had taken her Spanish rescue dog Sol outside to the toilet near their home in Dunbar, East Lothian, when a firework whizzed past them on November 5.
The two-year-old collie-greyhound cross was spooked by the loud bang and slipped his collar before dashing off.
A frantic search was launched but petrified Sol managed to run for more than three miles before he was struck by a car and killed instantly on the A1.
Fiona, who runs The Argyle and Cellar Bar in Edinburgh, has been left absolutely distraught by the loss of her dog and is now desperate for stricter regulations on fireworks.
Fiona said: “I just had Sol out for his usual quick walk. Loads of fireworks started going off and he was jumping up.
“He was on a lead but managed to get out of his collar. We couldn’t catch him and he was hit by a car head on.
“We are absolutely destroyed. I can’t eat or sleep. Sol was an amazing, confident and happy dog. We were so fond of him.
“The fireworks around us were absolutely ridiculous this year and really freaked Sol out.
