SUE Gray quit as Keir Starmer's chief of staff yesterday as she said she feared she was "becoming a distraction".

The key figure in the Prime Minister's circle said she was standing down after "intense" news coverage of her and will now take on a new Government job.

In a statement, she said it had "become clear to me that intense commentary around my position risked becoming a distraction to the government's vital work of change".

Gray has been at the centre of controversy since Labour got into power with No10 facing reports of infighting between her and other officials.

Last month, a row broke out after it emerged she earned more than the PM, with a £170,000 salary. The report included highly negative briefings about her, including one source saying she declined to take a pay cut after being warned this "very story" could come out a claim the Cabinet Office said was "false".
