JAKE WIGHTMAN has confessed his "big relief" at being handed wildcard in the men's 800 metres at the Paris Olympics as part of a 64-strong British athletics team.
The 29-year-old, who missed out on a 1500m slot after he was forced out of last weekend's trials, will be one of nine Scots lining up at the Stade de France with Eilish McColgan (below) and Nicole Yeargin also getting the nod from selectors.
It's a Plan B for Wightman who has had to fight back from multiple injuries since winning the world title over 1500m two years ago.
But with one berth up for grabs in his second event, his place at the top of the UK rankings won him a place ahead of Elliot Giles.
Wightman said: "It's not how I had hoped to be selected, but I'm still heading there with the same optimism I have had all season for these Games.
