ST JOHNSTONE defender James Brown has taken the rap for his role in the club’s rotten early-season run.

Brown admits he came up well short in performances after a poor pre-season.

It all got on top of him when suffering a shocker as the Perth men got pummelled 4-0 in Paisley.

Brown was to blame for St Mirren’s second goal then was hauled off – one of the last acts as boss by Steven MacLean.

Tonight the Saints renew rivalry with new father Brown believing he and his team-mates are in a better place.

He said: “I’ve not been myself. I struggled with injuries and form. They sort of come hand in hand and I’m probably still not where I need to be.

“The last St Mirren game was a low. I held my hands up, there was no denying it, I was nowhere near when I should’ve been.

“I’d made a few mistakes before that one and when it rains, it pours sometimes. That’s how it felt. It was tough. But you’ve got to face up to it and accept it. I haven’t been good enough.

“Off the back of all that, we lost the old gaffer so that sort of compounded it.
