Millionaires don't need a payment in winter

Sarwar says means-testing benefit is right move

ANAS Sarwar has backed a replacement benefit for the winter fuel payment being "targeted" at Scots who need it most.

The Scottish Labour leader said yesterday it made little sense for "millionaires" to get the handout at a time of immense pressure on public services.

But he said his party was still firmly in favour of other universal benefits such as prescriptions and tuition fees.

Old people in the UK, regardless of income, are eligible for a payment to help them pay for heating bills during the coldest months. But that universal scheme will end this year after Chancellor Rachel Reeves's announcement this week.
