447 take part in online event for group's 40th

A WHISKY club has set a world record for having the most participants in an online tasting event.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, which is the world's biggest whisky club, staged the event to mark its 40th birthday.

It has almost 40,000 members in 20 countries, with 447 of those logging on for the tasting to celebrate the occasion.

An adjudicator from Guinness World Records ran the rule over the tasting, where each member tried three drams.

The event covered 18 time zones, which meant New Yorkers enjoyed their whisky at 9am while those on Australia's west coast raised their glasses at midnight.
