SIR Andy Murray said an emotional farewell to tennis last night as he played his last ever match at the Paris Olympics.
The British fans turned out in force, in Union flags hats, headbands and waving flags, in a bid to keep his dream alive.
But it was not to be. Instead, the man from Dunblane who made history by becoming our first Wimbledon champion in 77 years took his final bow.
And his fans paid tribute with a standing ovation.
Murray and doubles partner Dan Evans put up a valiant performance in the quarter final match of the Paris Olympics at Roland Garros, but were beaten in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 by American pair Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.
They lost the second set 6-4 despite punching the air as they broke back against the Americans.
They went down fighting, with Andy raising his arms and encouraging their cheers in one last stand in the final set.
Last night tributes poured in for the tennis hero online after the match ended.
First Minister John Swinney said: "Commiserations to Andy Murray and Dan Evans. They put up such a spirited performance. Thank you Andy for how you have inspired us all. Scotland could not be more proud of you."
