THE BIG CHILL?

Ketchup: Fridge

While people have long believed that tomato sauce could be kept in the cupboard due to its high sugar and vinegar content, Heinz recently revealed that it should always be kept in the fridge, once opened, to keep the sauce fresh and its flavour tangy.

Tomato and cucumber: Cupboard

More than two-thirds of us keep tomatoes in the fridge, according to a survey, but the cold inhibits the enzymes that give them flavour, so keep them on the counter or in a cupboard. Similarly, the cold in a fridge can make cucumbers go mushy if they’re not wrapped.

Mayonnaise and salad cream: Fridge

Despite containing vinegar and other preservatives, mayonnaise and salad cream have a relatively low sugar content and contain egg and cream.

This means bacteria could thrive if they are not kept in the fridge once they have been opened.

Chocolate: Cupboard

Top confectionery firm Cadbury says chocolate should always be stored in a slightly cool, dry, dark place at temperatures less than 21C to ensure the quality isn’t compromised.
