The veteran MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington was given the Labour whip back yesterday, having been suspended in April last year over comments she made about racism.
The move by party chiefs appeared to be part of a carefully-arranged plan for Left-winger Ms Abbott, Britain's first female black MP, to stand down with dignity after the controversy.
But shortly after she was given back the whip a story appeared in a newspaper saying that she would still not be allowed to stand as a Labour MP at the general election on July 4.
