At the White House's request, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Iraq all called their opposite number in Tehran to discuss regional tensions, sources said.
The intense diplomacy came after Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that Israel "must be punished and it shall be" for an air strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria that killed seven senior military figures on April 1.
Among them was Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander in the Quds Force, an elite unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guards that is blamed by Israel and its allies for attacks on targets overseas.
