Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, 76, is said to have founded the powerful Sinaloa cartel in Mexico with Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, 67, who is currently jailed in the US.
Zambada was arrested in El Paso alongside El Chapo's son, Joaquín Guzmán López, 38, said the US justice department.
A Mexican federal official said they arrived in the US on a private plane and turned themselves into authorities. The US government had offered a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to Zambada's capture.
