In October 2023, the Prime Minister announced a plan to create a smoke-free generation. By introducing new laws that phase out the sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, the legal age of sale of tobacco items will rise by one year each year, so those turning 15 this year or younger will never be legally sold tobacco. It is hoped that the new legislation will not only save thousands of lives, but also save the NHS and social care billions of pounds.
