Housing minister Rachel Maclean initially said the decision had been put back until the Chancellor's autumn statement on November 22, despite weekend reports that an announcement could be made as soon as this week-ahead of the Conservatives' conference in Manchester.
She told GB News that Jeremy Hunt would lay out a decision "at the next fiscal event", meaning the statement, but then shied away from confirming that timetable in subsequent interviews this morning.
