Thousands of search and rescue teams were today sifting through rubble with hundreds of people still believed to be trapped underneath.
The epicentre of the earthquake was near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, a provincial capital of more than two million people, about 60 miles from the Syrian border.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at least 912 people were killed in Turkey and 5,383 people had been injured.
Syria's state news agency said the number of people who had died there was at least 320 with more than 1,000 injured. The death toll was expected to continue to rise.
