THE GOVERNMENT HAS set an ambitious target of awarding 12,900-km highway projects in the current financial year, as it seeks to address a slowing of construction activity.
The target, an increase of 50% over the previous year, is despite the fact that the awards in the current year so far have been less than 3,000 km.
In the first quarter, only 95 km of highways was awarded, but after that the awards gained momentum averaging over 600 km a month.
Further improvements were reported in November, when 773 km of highways was awarded.
Typically most of the project awards are done in March. Of the 8,581 km awarded in FY24, 3,709 km was awarded in the last month of the financial year.
