MICROBLOGGING SITE FINED ₹50 LAKH
Terming the company's plea devoid of merit, it also imposed a fine of ₹50 lakh on the microblogging site for the delay of one year in complying with the government's direction and approaching the court at the last minute.
The court rejected Twitter's plea that the government should frame guidelines on blocking of accounts. Failure to comply will result in an additional levy of ₹5,000 per day, the court said.
The HC order settles the debate over Section 69A, under which the government has the power to direct intermediaries to remove/ block any content or account which it considers detrimental to law and order, security, integrity, and sovereignty of the country, and friendly relations with neighbouring nations. It means that intermediaries will have to comply with government directions under Section 69A, and can move court if they wish to only after doing so.
