AGREEMENT REACHED ON EXPANDING THE BLOC, SAYS SOUTH AFRICA
PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA Modi on Thursday extended India's unequivocal support to the expansion of the BRICS grouping that strives to be the manifestation of the Global South, and an economic counterweight to the West. He also presented five suggestions to further broaden cooperation among the members of the grouping in a range of areas, including space exploration.
Hours after the Modi speech, South Africa announced that BRICS leaders have agreed to mechanisms for considering new members, paving the way for dozens of interested nations to join the group which has pledged to champion the 'Global South'. "We have agreed on the matter of expansion," South Africa's foreign minister Naledi Pandor said.
Addressing the plenary session of the five-nation grouping comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa in Johannesburg, Modi said the technology will play an important role in making the grouping a "future-ready" organisation, and offered India's readiness to share expertise in the digital domain.
"India fully supports the expansion of the BRICS membership and welcomes moving forward with a consensus on it," the prime minister said.
