TOYOTA KIRLOSKAR MOTOR (TKM) on Tuesday unveiled the world's first BS6 Stage-2 flex-fuel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), showcasing it to road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, heavy industries minister Mahendra Nath Pandey, and petroleum and natural gas minister Hardeep S Puri.
An Innova Hycross, this vehicle can run on E20 fuel (petrol blended with 20% ethanol) and also has an electric motor that can power its wheels. The carmaker said that under test conditions, it can run 40% of the distance and 60% of the time in electric mode with the engine shut off. And when the engine is working, 20% of the fuel burnt is ethanol.
Gadkari said that the government's focus on ethanol is for achieving energy self-reliance, increasing the incomes of farmers, and reducing the negative impact of fossil fuels on the environment.
