28 Convicted for Killing ABVP Man in Kasganj

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Lucknow on Thursday convicted 28 individuals in the murder case of 23-year-old Chandan Gupta, who was killed in a communal clash in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh during the "Tiranga yatra" on the Republic Day in 2018, a lawyer familiar with the matter said.

The NIA court of additional district and sessions judge Vivekanand Saran Tripathi, which also acquitted two accused over lack of evidence, will pronounce the quantum of punishment on Friday. "We will seek maximum punishment for all those convicted," district government counsel Manoj Tripathi said, confirming the development.

The judge found 28 accused guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 147 (rioting), besides provisions of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971.
